Let’s talk about dog parks! We frequently receive inquiries for dog training for good behavior at dog parks. Unfortunately, no matter how well dogs thrive in a dog behavior training program, this is impossible. Here’s why:

In theory, dog parks are awesome. It’s great for dogs to be around other dogs in a fun environment. But, many people use the dog park as their only source of exercise for their dogs. As a result, these types of dogs are so full of adrenaline that they may project this into aggression, dominance, and other unsafe behaviors. Not to mention, many dogs are not neutered, unsocialized, not licensed, and neglected. Your dog may react to this by developing his/her own inappropriate behaviors. The reality is, no matter how perfect your dog is, other dogs may not be. This is a recipe for disaster.

Dogs, like us, require socialization. We do not limit ourselves to one source of stimuli. We go to stores, restaurants, the gym, spend time with loved ones, and so on. These are all different types of socialization that stimulate us in different ways. All are necessary for us maintain our socialization skills and keep us happy!

So when you’re thinking about socializing your dog, do not limit your dog to the dog park and be aware of the risks. They too require different types of stimuli. Dog friendly environments, regular walks, runs, hikes, playtime with other people, new environments, quality time with you, to name a few. If your priority is to socialize your dog with other dogs, consider play dates with other friends that have dogs. That way, you can anticipate the dynamics between the dogs in a safe environment and also reinforce their good behavior. If a situation arises that compromises safety, it is much easier to manage
